THE PROGRAM
The Federal
Work-Study Program is funded by the Department of Education and is a
need-based student employment program. The program is designed to
assist students with the cost of attending college while giving them
valuable employment skills and training. Federal Work-Study is a
part of the Title IV Program (student financial aid) and is governed
by both federal regulations and school policy. To qualify for a
Federal Work-Study grant, students are required to file a Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
each academic year. Remember to apply early, federal work-study
funds are limited.
OBJECTIVE
Our intent is
to place the student in a position that relates to his program of
study when assigning jobs. If this is not possible, we try and
match required skills listed on the job description submitted by
prospective FWS supervisors. It is our hope that all eligible
students are able to obtain work-study jobs and once employed, can
receive or enhance skills that will assist them in competing in the
job market upon completion of their studies at Midlands Technical
College. Recipients of a Federal Work-Study award and FWS
supervisors are required to complete an on-line orientation. After
completing the on-line orientation and signing affidavit, students
must complete and print an employment packet.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
A percentage of work-study
allocations must be reported to the Department of Education as
community service. Community Service designees include family
literacy agencies and local governmental and community based
organizations. These agencies must provide assistance to the
community as a whole, not a select group. Students will not be paid
for work performed at agencies not approved by the FWS staff
TUTORS
The Federal Work Study Program at
Midlands Technical College, per federal regulations, employs reading
and math tutors each year. When placing reading tutors, priority is
given to schools participating in a reading reform project. Tutors,
both reading and math, can be assigned to preschool facilities or
elementary schools. These facilities must also support the
community as a whole.
