RADIOLOGIC
SCIENCES
A person trained in this profession may specialize in their own area, as listed below or pursue careers as educators, researchers, consultants or administrators. The constant growth in this field has created many new and exciting career opportunities. There are several choices to make when considering a career in radiologic technology.
At Midlands Technical College, we have two radiology programs. Our Associate Degree program will train students who prefer to be in the hospital environment. These students will receive additional training in fluoroscopy, contrast studies, level 1 trauma, surgery, and CT Scan. Upon graduation and passing of the A.R.R.T. examination, these graduates are able to specialize in a wide variety of modalities.
Our certificate program, General Radiography, will train students who prefer to be in a smaller setting such as a doctor’s office, urgent care or orthopedic office. These students will learn all examinations performed on the skeletal system. They will learn additional skills to make them very marketable in this environment such as venipuncture, EKG, basic lab procedures, vital signs and patient assessment. These graduates are able to specialize in Bone Densitometry, Sonography and Nuclear Medicine once they complete the AOT degree (Associates in Occupational Technology). Both groups of students may have to take a few additional classes to meet the prerequisites of the program of interest.
Salaries vary nationwide. However, the range is usually reflective of training, education, and experience. Excellent benefit packages often accompany a higher than average pay scale. Employment opportunities are available nationwide and offer the radiologic technologist flexible work situations to accommodate various lifestyles and needs. Many hospital or college based programs offer financial assistance for qualified students. Admission requirements vary but basic math and science skills are important. On completion of an accredited program, the graduate is eligible for certification in the field of radiologic technology.
Areas of specialization include the following:
Computerized Tomography (CT Scanning)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI Scanning)
Nuclear Medicine
Sonography/ Ultrasound
Interventional Radiology (Special Procedures/ Heart Catheterizations)
