MTC: Learning Outcomes

Objectives to be accomplished by 2003

Establish consensus on a set of core competencies for 21st Century Student Learning Outcomes.  Assess the current status of these competencies on campus.

Implement General Education Core Curriculum across the institution including

  •     specific learning outcomes for each competency

  •     levels of performance that students should meet

  •     concrete indices of student work to demonstrate each level

  •     assessment strategies for measuring student achievement at each level

Identify and implement best practices and multiple models for delivery and support of the 21st Century Learning Outcomes

Develop nontraditional methods for documenting student achievement of 21st Century Learning Outcomes

Share the model programs with other colleges and develop an advocacy plan for influencing local and state educators and policymakers to support performance-based practices for higher education

Where we are as we begin:

General Education Core in place, with revisions, since 1990

Over a decade of experience in systemic assessment

Culture of integrating general education “across the curriculum”

Well-defined student learning outcomes by course and by program

Faculty support for alternative ways to assess students’ knowledge and skills

Redefine, modify General Education Core

Across the curriculum emphasis on

  •      …information literacy

  •      …speaking

  •      …writing

  •      …teamwork

“Roving” instructors in each of these four skills to team teach in career majors just-in-time to integrate the skills with technical content

Development of digital tutorial materials in each of the four skills for faculty and student development

Smart card documentation of students’ competencies
