Academic Life: Or Keeping the Instructor Happy
- On the first day of class, you will receive a “course syllabus.” This important information should be kept throughout the class term. It lists the instructor’s expectations regarding attendance, course work and lecture time. It will also give contact information for the instructor. Become very familiar with this syllabus.
- Come to class on time.
- Come to class prepared. Have your assignments completed and ready to turn into the instructor.
- If you feel you could be easily distracted, sit in a seat near the front of the classroom.
- Take notes of important points presented by the instructor during class time.
- Your instructor will appreciate direct eye contact. This suggests you are interested in what they have to say. It is not considered rude to look at your instructor directly.
- It is polite NOT to talk to others while your instructor is lecturing the class. If you are talking, it suggests that you are not listening to the lecture.
- Many instructors welcome questions during the lecture. This suggests you are interested in what they are saying and want to know more. It is best to ask questions when the instructor is facing the class and not speaking. It is best not to ask questions when he has turned to write on the board.
- The classroom setting may be informal at times. Students and faculty may dress casually. Students may put their feet up and instructors may sit on the desk while they lecture.
- At the first sign of difficulty, approach the instructor and let them know you are having trouble understanding the lesson. They may recommend that you seek help through Student Support Services, the Tutoring Center, the Counseling Center or study groups.
