Dear Sixth Graders,
Gear Up is a great program. I have a lot of fun. When I started I was
shy, but now after how nice they treated me I now am open. I love coming
and getting away from the usually people that I usually hang out with.
In Gear Up we have lots of fun. We work out problems with our own heads
and were never told we are wrong because they try to help us find an
answer when we are wrong. You never have to worry about being embarrassed
because we all are the same age and are going threw the same things in
this time of or life.
I don’t know what you will do but when we started we located a new
planet. Next we found out the distance to the planet and how long it would
take us to get there with a certain space ship. We also found the period
of revolution, rotation and stuff like that. Now we are talking about who
and what we should send to the planet.

| To future GEAR UP students
So far in GEAR UP I’ve made a great number of friends. The class I’m
in is like a family I only get to see on Saturdays. I know this program
has helped me in more ways than one. For anyone who ever asks me about
this program, I tell them of all the fun things we do together and all the
times I’ve learned something I never thought I would want to learn. Now
that I’ve found out what this program is like I can’t explain it
really. Once someone has been in the program they will know what I mean.
This program and these people have helped me get over my problem with
being so antisocial. There are so many positive effects GEAR UP can have
on a person. I do have one negative comment, we should get together more
often.

Dear sixth graders,
My name is Shelton Hall and I am a member of the gear up program. We do
all sorts of things, the number one goal for us this year is to find all
sorts of things out about the new planet we discovered, Artemis. I’m not
going to tell anything that is real important, because I want you to find
out the problems yourself. I have met a lot of nice people here and maid
new friends. This has been a wonderful experience for me and I hope it is
the same for you also.

Dear Sixth graders,
If you are thinking about having fun next year, you need to be in the
MTC Gear Up Program. The MTC Gear Up Program has many hands on activities.
They also go on lots of trips some them are like Carowinds, Discovery
Place and many more. They have lots of nice teachers some of their name
are Miss Stephanie, Mrs. Diane, Mrs. Joy and many more. In the MTC Gear UP
Program, you will be able to make many friends from all over South
Carolina. Some of the places that kids come from are Swansea, Busbee, and
many different schools.
When you go to the MTC Gear UP Program, you will go to a rope course.
The rope course is a very fun activity were you will try to get about 20
people on a little platform.

| I heard that some people are talking to you
about gear up? Gear up is a really nice program. It is kind of like school
but it is not. You do more fun things in this program and it teaches you
some of the skills you will need to do well in your life. It gives you
something to on Saturday. It teaches you CPR and how to save someone’s
life. My favorite part of gear up is the fact that we get to go on trips.
You will be doing lots of things in gear up and most of them are going to
fun and exciting.

Future Gear Up Students
Dear sixth graders,
I have heard that some of you will be joining the Gear Up program next
year. I think that this is a great opportunity for everyone. It can help
you in many different ways. When they told me that I was going to be in
the Gear Up program, I never thought it would be this fun! Some of the
things that we are doing have great interest to me. For example, what we
are doing now is working on a planet. We had to do some research on this
planet; we even have to name it. We had to find the diameter of the planet
and the distance from the planet to the sun and moon! Right now, we are
trying to figure out if anything or anyone can live on this planet or even
go to the planet!
This is not the only thing that we do here at Gear Up. We have also
gone out on the airport campus to do a rope course! That was the most fun
that I have had here so far, but I am sure there is more to come! During
the summer, we will be working with CPR! I think that will be a lot of
fun!
Most of all, I think the teachers are great! They are really nice and
supportive to everyone! If you get off track, they are sure to get you
back on. They never leave you out either! They make sure you are joined
with in with the group and that you are a part of whatever they are
working on!
If you are one of the lucky people to join Gear up, than I am sure you
will have plenty of fun and education!

Dear Sixth Graders,
I am a Gear Up student, and the program has many different projects
that can help with Math. In addition, if you’re already good in Math it
can help to make you smarter. In addition, the most important thing is it
helps you learn how to work together in groups, and with other people. It
also has names of groups like: red team, blue team, and more. The most
important thing is that your learning to get ready for College.
The things you would do is learn how to do CPR. With that it keeps you
safe, and it helps you no what to do in a death risking point. Also you
get to go to a Ropes course were you can climb ropes, and learn to us team
work. Also while at the Ropes course you have a lot of fun. Also the field
trips your going to be going on are "awesome"! You go to
Fort Discovery, but that is the first but not the last if you think that
is fun wait until you go to Carowinds! Also you get breakfast in the
morning it is very good, the best thing is lunch now that will fill you up
fast.
In my conclusion about Gear Up it is the best thing that can happen to
you in the name of school. I hope that you will take my word on joining
the Gear Up program have a nice day!

Dear 6th graders,
Hi, my name is Jeremy Smoak. So far GEAR UP has been fun and very cool.
I hope y’all have fun like we have had so far. We have discovered a new
and tubular planet. We have had an awesome time finding out if we could
live there or not. I have met some really interesting people in this
program, mostly teachers, but you know how they are. I hope you have as
good a time in your first year as I did.

The GEAR UP is a fantastic program to
be in. You do all kinds of things like go on field trips like the
Discovery Place and Carowinds and study cool things that are in the
atmosphere. To me, one of the best things I like about this program is the
types of math problems that we do. It is just fun. Sometimes I just have
too much fun. I guess it’s the teachers that make it fun.
In the GEAR UP, we learned how to do CPR. We also learned about
how to care for burns, scrapes, and cuts. We even pretended that we had a
bad cut and we did everything that was suppose to be done with a real one.
Another thing that we do is this. We can type letters on a computer and
print them. When ever I get a hold of a computer, I do some crazy typing.
Well, since my hands are tired and my brain’s almost empty, I need to
stop. I hope I have gotten the word to you that GEAR UP is a great
program and you’ll have fun.

Dear, Sixth graders
If you are interested in fun activities and doing everything for free.
You should come to the MTC GearUp academy. We do things that schools can’t
do that the GearUp academy can do. For example we get to go to Discovery
place. And we get to go to Carowinds. We have a lot of people who come
from all over the place. For example I Emmanuel come from Swansea, SC. And
I meet people from Batesburg-Leesville. And form all over South Carolina.
We have teachers from all over the place to. For example my staff members
are very nice. Miss Stephanie is my teacher and she laughs and plays like
us. What I am trying to say is, we have classes like regular school but it
is fun instead of boring. We do a lot of stuff to do in GEARUP. And the
best part about it is that it is that everything is FREE!

Students,
The Gear-Up program is here to help you. You learn but have fun, and
experience new things each and every day. My name is Donnie Rutledge and
the program has helped in many different ways. It has inspired and
encouraged me to do try new things. For me it started out slow for me but
it gets faster and better as you met new people. There are several fun and
learning activities you will do and one of the main things that you can’t
do is quite or give up, just because you don’t get something right the
first. You don’t want to learn that the hard way. This program gives you
a break away from little brothers or sisters that will sometimes annoy you
and you can tell your family what you did while you were here.
If there is only one thing you remember, let it be that you never quite
because you didn’t do it right the first time. Just try and try until
you do it right.

| Midlands Technical College GearUp is a
wonderful program for children everywhere no matter what your race or
culture is. In GearUp you will be so busy doing stuff to be bored. As a
student at Midlands Tech I spend time on Saturdays going to the lab,
learning to work with other people, and spend time with people that make
me feel safe no matter what I am doing. If you ever feel that GearUp is
not what you expected then talk to Mrs. Diane Carr, and she will explain.

Dear Sixth Graders,
When you start Gear Up is a fun and exciting program. It is a good
program to help you in the future. Star Tech can be very hard but fun at
the same time. You will like all the different places you will go with
this program. You will also have difficult time trying to figuring things
out at times but, the staff will help you in any way you can. The program
is very fun and exciting.

| Hi my name is Tiffany M. Summers have been in
the Gear Up Program since the seventy grade. As a seventh grader you might
find it kind of boring at first. But when you come the second or third
time you will see it being OK. This program helps you get ready for
college. You will be doing STAR TECH, which is not all that boring. In the
middle of the day Mrs. Diane will give you lunch. For lunch you will have
subs, pizza, Taco Bell food and other things. Another thing that you will
be doing is going on trips like to the Discover Place, Carowinds and other

Dear Six Grader’s
MTC GEAR UP is a great program for the future 7th grader. It
will help you to learn about your solar systems. In the GEAR UP you meet
new people from different schools and meet staff member from the program.
You will learn leadership skill and team building skills. I hoop you will
enjoy the program as I have I be highly recommend this program to all 7th
graders. Please take the time to look into it. See you around at the GEAR
