The State Newspaper

The State was kind enough to provide newspapers for each Saturday we meet. As the kids arrived - either by bus or with their parents - they would come in and get some breakfast and pick up the paper.

From around 8:45 until 9:15 each morning of the Saturday Academies, the
students arrive for breakfast and to read the morning newspaper.

Generally this lasted from about 8:45 until about 9:15 those mornings at which time an instructor or mentor would lead the group in a 15 to 30 minute discussion of articles of interest before the day's activities began.

This was done to encourage and support students’ academic skills in reading and communications, newspapers are provided during the first half hour for the students to read and then discuss articles of interest.

GearUp students socialize briefly over the morning newspaper
before breaking up into their teams.
