COSTS OF ESL CLASSES

The cost of a class at Midlands Technical College is different in different situations. The cost is related to your immigration status and your residence in this area. However, if you are new to the area or on a work visa, you may enroll in ESL classes through Continuing Education so that your costs are about the same as a resident of the area. You will need someone at the college to help you decide the best way to enroll because the decision depends on many factors.

Please see a counsellor here for help in deciding how to enroll.

You may also call Lisa Cheeks at 738-7684 for an appointment with a counsellor.

The information below is NOT enough to help you decide how you should enroll. It will give you some ideas about the different options for enrollment, but please talk to an ESL counselor to help you decide the best and least expensive way to enroll.

Citizens, legal residents (with green cards), some refugees, and others:
If you are a citizen, a legal resident, a refugee, or in certain other categories, you are eligible to establish in-county residence, the cheapest way to enroll. You will probably need to prove that you have lived in Richland, Lexington, or Fairfield county for a year to be able to get this rate. You will need documentation such as a driver's license or letter of employment. An official of the college will make this judgment. You may also be eligible for financial aid. Here are costs for people who are residents and people who are not.  For details on tuition, click here. If you are not a resident, there still may be an inexpensive way to enroll. Keep reading.

Students who have recently moved to this area, people with work visas and other kinds of visas:
If you aren't a citizen or legal resident, or if you recently moved to this area, another kind of enrollment may be cheaper for you. For ESL classes only, you may enroll through Continuing Education. The cost of one class through Continuing Education is $300 plus books. You do not received credit for these classes, but you may go on to higher level classes once you have taken them.

F-1 or I-20 students and others who must be enrolled full time in credit classes:
If you are here on a student visa, you must be enrolled fulltime in classes for credit. You must pay out-of-state tuition. Unfortunately, there is not a cheaper way for you to enroll.

Costs of books and fees:
Books average about $50 per class. You will need a dictionary for every ESL class, but you only need to buy it once. The first time you enroll for credit, you must pay a $25.00 enrollment fee, but you do not have to pay that for any other semester. You must also pay a $50 fee for support services (library, computers, advisors, etc.) every semester.
