PRE-RESPIRATORY CARE
Phase I

DESCRIPTION:
This certificate is Phase I of a two-phase Respiratory Care program. This program provides the students with the general education competencies required to enter the technical, clinical phase of the Respiratory Care Program. The student will gain skills in written and oral communication, math, science, psychology, problem solving, research and computers which are needed as a foundation for success as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Completion of the Pre-Health Care Certificate with a 2.5 GPA or higher
OR
HOBET Composite 50% Reading 50%, Math 50%,
Algebra 50%
MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
SAT Total 910 Verbal 430; MAT 480 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
ACT 19 Comp Verbal 18; Mat 23 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OTHER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • High school or college credits in at least 2 science/math courses (biology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, physics, algebra) recommended.
  • First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Hospital observations scheduled by the admissions office after all academic entry requirements are met.
  • Interview - scheduled after hospital tour completed
  • Emotional and physical ability to carry out normal activities of respiratory care as determined by physical examination by physician and completion of personal health history. Applicant must have all sensory abilities necessary to perform safe and effective patient care as evaluated by the Program Director.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of 26 semester credit hours are required to complete this certificate. A minimum grade of "C" must be attained in all respiratory, math and science courses. No Respiratory or science course may be repeated more than once.

PROGRAM NOTES:

  1. Students do not have to complete the entire certificate prior to starting the program.
  2. A pre-interview hospital tour and pre-admission interview are required prior to acceptance. If applicable ENG 100, RDG 101, MAT 102 must be completed before qualifying for the tour and an interview.
  3. One or more of the objective criteria for admission may be waived or modified for certain highly qualified applicants based solely on the Program Director's decision.
  4. The ASSET test is required for advisement.
  5. Transferability or substitution of courses will be determined by the Program Director.
  6. Students have the option of taking equivalent college transfer courses or electives in lieu of required courses with approval from the Program Director.
