PRACTICAL NURSING

DESCRIPTION:
The program is designed to prepare practical nurses who provide patient care in structured settings under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN examination and become Licensed Practical Nurses.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
SAT Total 1000 Minimum Verbal 500; Math 500 Within 3 years of applying to practical nursing
OR
ACT 20 Comp Minimum Verbal 20; Math 23 Within 3 years of applying to practical nursing
OR
Complete the Pre-Nursing Certificate with a grade of "C" or better in each course with a minimum GPA of 2.75 on the 8 courses, and no more than one repeat per course.
OR
Hold a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at time of the degree or hold an associate degree from a regionally accredited college with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher at time of the degree.
OTHER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  • Students must meet the College's admission requirements. Admission to the college does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.
  • After receiving notice from Admissions, the student must attend Part I of a two part orientation session to receive a start date for nursing.
OTHER PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School or college credits in biology and algebra are recommended.
  • Emotional and physical ability to carry out normal activities of nursing care as determined by physical examination is required.
  • Prior to entry into NUR 101, the student must attend Part II of the orientation session.
  • Prior to entry into NUR 101, the student must submit a health form, current immunizations including MMR and Hepatitis B or a signed informed refusal, 2-Step PPD/Chest x-ray. Physical exam must be done within 45 days of entrance to program.
  • Photo (2"x2") is required for student's file.
  • Current CPR (Child, Infant & Adult) certification is required at time of entry into NUR 101.
  • SLED or FBI check will be conducted for students entering NUR 101 based on student's residency status for the last 12 months.

 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

Successful completion of the 44 semester credit hours in the practical nursing curriculum is required for graduation. A minimum grade of "C" must be attained in all required courses. Only one clinical nursing course can be repeated to attain a "C" or better. The student must complete all coursework within 24 months of beginning NUR 101.

Upon completion of the program, the student is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). The program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, external link (61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006; 212-363-5555) and the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Candidates who have criminal records may be required to appear before the South Carolina Board of Nursing, which will determine eligibility to take the NCLEX-PN exam.

PROGRAM NOTES:

  1. Admission to nursing programs is on a "first qualified, first accepted" basis. Applicants who complete the admission requirements to enter the nursing program for which they are applying are admitted on a space available basis. Admission requirements vary with the specific nursing program. Being admitted to Practical Nursing and successfully completing the Diploma in Practical Nursing does not guarantee admission to upper level A.D.N. courses.
  2. Student must have cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0 for all college course work for entrance into nursing curriculum.
  3. Nursing courses must be taken in sequence. If a student receives a "D", "F", "W" or "WF" in any nursing course, that course must be repeated successfully before the student can continue in the program.
  4. Transfer of credit for nursing courses will be determined by Department Chair or designee.

  7. All science courses must be taken within 5 years of program entry.
  8. Students completing the Diploma in Practical Nursing who wish to continue into the ADN program must exit the nursing program with their Diploma, pass the NCLEX-PN and become a Licensed Practical Nurse and meet admission requirements for the ADN program.
  9. Students are required to take standardized tests at an approximate cost of $46 a semester.
  10. Approximate cost for taking the licensure exam (NCLEX-PN) upon completion of the program is $300.
  11. Students must purchase liability insurance each semester at a cost of approximately $5.
  12. Students must purchase a uniform and special equipment the first semester (the approximate cost is $150). Skills packets, learning packets and books must be purchased at the bookstore for nursing courses.
