DESCRIPTION:
The Medical Office Administrative Assistant certificate is offered as a 38 credit-hour program which prepares graduates to be specialists in administrative support activities in larger medical practices, clinics and hospitals. The focus in the program is solely on the clerical/administrative functions with no clinical training or responsibilities. Training consists of classroom instruction followed by practical experience through an internship in a medical office environment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Basic keyboarding is still a skill necessary for successful completion in the OST program; OST-105 keyboarding is a prerequisite course for most OST courses. Students must take the keyboarding proficiency test.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
- A minimum of 38 semester credit hours are required to complete the Medical Office Administrative Assistant Certificate.
- Students must earn a grade of "C" or better in all of the courses offered within the Health Sciences, Business and Information Systems Technology departments for the grade to count toward graduation.
- Students may repeat no more than two technology courses.
- Students must meet all exit program competencies for graduation from this program.
PROGRAM NOTES:
- A three-semester program.
- Program begins in Fall semester on Airport Campus.
- Students in the Medical Office Administrative Assistant certificate program will move through the program as a cohort. Thus, students will be admitted to begin in a specific semester each year (generally the fall semester) and will progress through courses in a specific sequence.
- A criminal background check and/or drug screening may be required by internship sites before assignment to them.

- For academic progression policies, see the MTC catalog.
- Students must complete all developmental courses before being fully admitted to the program.
- Students must provide their own transportation to and from medical practicum (internship) site.
- Students who are admitted to the Medical Office Administrative Assistant program may be required to purchase special attire for use at practicum (internship) site at an approximate cost of $25.
- The 4-credit hours internship will yield approximately 160 contact hours in any given semester. In the summer 10-week semester, this amounts to 16 hours per week, or two full 8-hour days per week.
