DESCRIPTION:
The Legal Administrative Assistant Certificate Program is a specialized program designed to provide advanced training and simulated practice in the administrative responsibilities required to complement the legal team in law firms, private or public corporations, or government departments. Legal terminology, legal transcription, court procedures, and computer applications are emphasized. This comprehensive, short-term certificate prepares students for employment in law offices, insurance companies, financial institutions, courts, and police departments, as well as in legal departments of business firms and government offices.

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Attend orientation session
  • 40 nwpm and departmental approval

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Keyboarding is a skill necessary for successful completion in the Legal Administrative Assistant program. Prior to entry into the program, students must demonstrate their ability to key straight-copy at a rate of 40 net words per minute (nwpm). Students must make an appointment with an AOT/OST instructor to administer two five minute timed writings.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • A minimum of 36 semester credit hours are required to complete the Legal Administrative Assistant Certificate.
  • Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all of the courses offered within the Business and Information Systems Technology departments for the grade to count toward graduation.
  • Students may repeat no more than two technology courses.
  • AOT 213 Legal Document Production has an exit speed requirement of 60 nwpm.
  • Students must meet all exit program competencies for graduation from this program.

PROGRAM NOTES:
  1. A three-semester program.
  2. Program begins in Fall semester on Airport Campus.
  3. Students in the Legal Administrative Assistant certificate program will move through the program as a cohort. Students will be admitted to begin in the Fall semester each year and will progress through the program in a specific course sequence.

  6. Students must complete all developmental courses and meet the keyboarding entrance requirement before being fully admitted to the program.
  7. Students must be advised by the Department.
