Course Placement Information and Exceptions for New Students

Students are placed in English courses based on BOTH Reading and Writing sample scores. A student must have at least a score of 40 on ASSET Reading or 80 on Compass Reading AND a writing sample score of 30 to enroll in English 101 without needing to enroll in developmental studies reading or English course first.

  1. If a student scores into Reading 035 with a writing sample of 20 or 30, the student should retake the reading test to try to improve the initial test score.

  2. If the writing sample is 10, the student should enroll in English 035 and Reading 035.

  3. If the writing sample is 20 or 30 and the COMPASS reading is 60 or the ASSET reading score is 34, contact the Developmental Studies Chairman for assistance at 822-3239.

  4. If the writing sample is 30 and the COMPASS reading is 79 or the ASSET reading score is 39, call the Developmental Studies Chairman for assistance at 822-3239.

  5. Students should be referred to the Student Assessment Office to retake the placement test if the test scores will be over three years old when the student enrolls in the course OR if the test score is within one or two points of the score needed for placement in the subsequent course.

Course Placement Information and Exceptions for Transfer Students

  1. ALL students transferring into MTC from another college must have ENG-101 on their transcript in order to be admitted based on their transcript. If they don't have ENG 101 with a "C" or better, then they are required to take the placement exam. For MTC courses that have RDG-100 prerequisites, the prerequisite check system has been developed to look for either RDG-100 or ENG-101 (or higher level English). If the prerequisite check system finds either RDG 100 or ENG 101, then it recognizes the RDG 100 prerequisite as being met. There is no way to selectively add RDG-100 to particular courses transferred in from other colleges.

  2. ALL international students are required to take the placement exams before they are admitted regardless of previous international college work. International students are not exempted from reading just because they transfer in coursework, even if that course is equivalent to a "reading intensive" course here.
