Once the institution has received the necessary documentation, what can we expect in terms of service?
- The requests will be reviewed compared to the essential requirements for the academic program to determine an accommodation(s). The institution should acknowledge your correspondence in a reasonable timeframe.
- Note - the institution is not required to waive or alter essential course or program requirements (for example, the minimum number of words typed per minute to successfully complete the keyboarding course) for your student to participate.
- The institution has the right to offer an alternative accommodation if the alternative is considered effective.
- Unlike the environment in a high school, do not expect your postsecondary institution to invite you to participate in your student’s accommodation process, to develop an IEP or provide you with academic progress reports; such communication may violate your student’s right to privacy under FERPA (the Family Education Right to Privacy Act).
