What academic accommodations must a postsecondary institution provide?
- Accommodations are determined based on your student’s disability; individual needs and are provided on a case-by-case basis.
- By law, a postsecondary institution is not required to substantially modify essential requirements of a course or program of study for your student to participate.
- The institution also does not have to provide personal assistance or attendants, guides, readers for personal use or study, or tutors for personal study or typing.
Academic accommodations may include services, for example, such as:
- reducing the course load while retaining full-time status
- a note taker
- permission to use a tape recorder
- sign language interpreter
- extended testing time
- appropriate assistive technology or adaptive software
