ATTENDANCE POLICY:                The department policy will apply.  The number of absences allowed is equal to twice the number of times the course meets per week.  Students are allowed four absences.  After four absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with the number of class periods missed.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:         In order to complete the course successfully, students should attend each class session.  Students are responsible for lessons covered from the first day of class; students must complete and submit to the instructor all assigned lessons on or before the announced due date.  Late work will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.   Course assignments and due dates are subject to change based on the needs of the class.
CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK:       Students are expected to complete the lessons in class using the Glencoe Keyboarding software.  Students who are absent from class may complete the lessons in the open computer labs in order to keep up with the class.
COMPUTER TIME:             In addition to completing outside of class any missed lessons due to absences, students are also encouraged to practice keyboarding outside of class.  Daily practice on drills learned is recommended and will reinforce the development of keyboarding skills and knowledge of the keyboard.
CLASSROOM RULES:                   No eating, drinking, or smoking will be allowed in the classroom.  All beepers, cellular phones, and any electronic devices must be turned off while the student is in class. Students are expected to arrive to class on time.  Work must be clearly marked and dated.
DISABILITY ISSUES:                      Midlands Technical College provides accommodations, as appropriate, to individuals who have documented disabilities.  Students interested in receiving information about accommodations and services should contact a counselor in the Disability Resource Center .  Confidentiality of the information received will be maintained.
MAKEUP TESTS:                             Tests will be announced a week in advance.  Students who are absent during a scheduled test must make up the test when returning to class.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep abreast of test dates and makeup tests.

GRADING SCALE:                          The following department grading scale will be used:

94-100 A

87-93   B

78-86   C

0-77     F

GRADE COMPUTATION:              Tests/Homework (Production)  50%

                                                            Speed (timed writings)              40%

                                                            Technique                                 10%

TESTS GRADING:                           Students will be given two tests during the semester and a final exam.  Tests will be objective (written) and hands-on (problems to key).

SPEED GRADING:                          The three highest timed writing scores will be averaged, and the speed scale is as follows:

50+NWPM*               A                     *Net Words per Minute. NWPM is calculated as follows:

40-49 NWPM             B                     Gross Words per Minute (GWPM) – Number of errors =

30-39 NWPM             C                                 Net Words per Minute (NWPM)

*****YOU MUST BE ABLE TO TYPE 30 NET WORDS PER MINUTE WITH NO MORE THAN FIVE (5) ERRORS TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR OST 110.*****

HOMEWORK GRADING:             Homework assignments are graded on a 100-point scale; each student begins with 100 points. Students grade will be a percentage of work done.  Points will be taken off for incomplete and/or late work.  All work must be labeled with the lesson and identification for each item in the lesson.  (Gregg Keyboarding does this automatically but if you use any other software—such as Word—you must do this yourself.)
TECHNIQUES GRADING: Students must demonstrate their ability to keyboard properly using correct finger reaches and body position (refer to page vii in textbook).  The instructor will be constantly observing the students’ body and hand positions. Each student will be given a final technique check to demonstrate his/her ability to operate the keyboard using the touch method.

NOTE:  No “Incomplete” grades will be issued without the approval of the department head.  All students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all courses offered within the  Information Systems Department in order for the grade to be counted toward graduation.
