About Our Tutoring

One-on-one tutoring is extremely beneficial. Students who use the Writing Center consistently perform better in class and score better on papers. The Writing Center, however, is neither a quality checker to predict an instructor's grade, nor a grammar checker to fix student's errors. The tutors are teachers, not MTC students, and are dedicated to helping students learn.

About Our Center

Midlands Technical College is proud of its staff and its facilities to help its student body.  There are two Writing Centers, one at each of the College's main campuses, Airport and Beltline, and a new satellite Center at Fort Jackson.  The purpose of each Writing Center is to help students during any phase of the writing process. No appointments are needed, since we work on a first come, first served basis. The first and most important way we help is the tutoring help we provide. Our main function is to provide tutoring help such as with: Sec2.jpg (14128 bytes)

  • Explaining an assignment
  • Brainstorming ideas
  • Developing a thesis
  • Organizing a plan
  • Looking at early paper drafts
  • Suggesting ways to revise
  • Teaching sentence correctness

About Our Tutors

Our trained, professional tutors come from a variety of disciplines, including education, history, theater, philosophy, law, and especially English.  Most teach courses with Midlands Technical College. Also, expert ESL (English as a Second Language) tutors are available at various times of the day, so please check their schedules, if needed.

About Our Computers

Next to one-on-one tutoring, another purpose of the Writing Center is to provide computers for word processing documents. Currently, each Center, Airport and Beltline campus, has 20 computers with Windows 95, Microsoft Office, WordPerfect 6.1 and a variety of other programs. Students can come to work on papers even if no help is sought from the staff. The tutors will answer questions about word processing for students unfamiliar with the program or equipment.  To use the computers, students should bring a 3.5 inch, IBM formatted diskette. Word processing is a skill that would be an asset to all students for their life in and after college. Students are welcome to come simply to practice, and again the tutors are eager to assist.

About Other Resources

The Writing Center is proud of its assortment of written aids for students. Many handout sheets are available on topics from sentence correctness to the writing process. The handouts are free and often extremely helpful. The Center also has many textbooks that can be browsed through at the Center. Occasionally, a textbook, different from the required one for an English class, will phrase information in a way more understandable manner.
