COURSE DESCRIPTION: The objective of this course is to develop an understanding of the Internet as a medium of information exchange and to develop skills in designing simple web papers using HTML tags for page layouts, hypertext links, site navigation, and simple multimedia special effects. Pages will be constructed using text editors.
STUDENT COMPETENCIES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to perform the following tasks:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic Web page concepts by creating Web pages
using HTML, XHTML, and Cascading Style Sheet standards.
2. Be able to discuss the positive and negative impacts of Internet technology
on business and society, and present both sides of relevant issues.
3. Be able to use and manage email by send messages, attaching files, downloading
and viewing files, and create contact lists and email folders.
4. Demonstrate the use of several different Web browsers and be able explain how they differ.
5. Explain how search engines work and demonstrate the use of several
search services to effectively locate information on the Internet.
6. Discuss privacy, security, and intellectual property issues within
the context of the Internet.
7. Be able to explain common Internet protocols such as FTP, Telnt, TCP/IP, and HTTP.
8. Be able to upload a Web site to a server and use it.
COURSE COMPETENCIES AND
PERFORMANCE MEASURES: As part of the
Information System Technology Department’s ongoing learning outcome
assessment activities, the following competencies have been developed to
support the stated learning outcomes, together with performance measures to
assess the students' success in attaining those competencies.
Course Competency: Create Web pages using HTML, XHTML, and Cascading Style Sheet standards.
Measurement Instrument and Success Criteria: The success criteria are 70% of students will score 80 or above on an assigned semester project and 70% of students will score 80 or above on tutorial tests.

All projects must be turned in on or before the due date for that program or project. No projects will be accepted after the due dates. No incomplete grades will be given. Everyone must take the final exam.

Academic integrity
questions should be resolved by consulting
the Student Code as documented in
the Midlands Technical College Student Handbook. All issues of academic
dishonesty will be referred to the director of Campus Life.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: You are responsible for attending class, and if
you miss class, finding out what you need to catch up. After absences
totaling more than 15% of
class sessions, the instructor may drop you from
the course, although it is your responsibility to drop the course if you
intend to do so. Roll with be taken at
the beginning of class, and if you
miss the roll, you will be counted absent,
unless you notify the instructor
after class, in which case you will be marked
late, with 3 late marks equal
to 1 absence. You would check the website regularly
for class materials.

CAMPUS EMERGENCY PROTOCOL: Students and employees are asked to report safety concerns or suspicious activities to Campus Security at 7199(on campus), or 738-7199 (cell phone and off campus). In the event of an emergency, student and employee protocol is to immediately call Campus Security or local 911. If an emergency occurs, employees and students may seek additional information and instructions via MTC Information Centers, email, college Intranet, the MTC website, campus voice mail and loud speakers.
The College may be closed because of inclement weather. This news should be available on the website at www.midlandstech.edu at the main phone number at 738-1400, and announced on WIS-TV and radio. Please check frequently in changeable weather for closings and re-openings. If the College closing or reopening means that you will have at least 30 minutes of a class, you should come to class. Please do not call the IST Department office or the President’s office with closure questions.
