COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course emphasizes file maintenance and tables using advanced concepts in COBOL.

STUDENT COMPETENCIES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be competent to perform the following tasks:

1.    Communicate an understanding of basic operations and control structures

2.   Use deskcheck design logic to verify accuracy and document procedures in standard format

3.    Understand and code a large EDIT program

4.    Understand and use the COPY statement

5.    Understand and use the CALL statement

6.    Understand and use Variable Length records

7.    Understand IBM VSAM files and how to create and use them

8.    Code a Random Update program

9.    Understand and use all aspects of COBOL input/output statements

10.Understand basic debugging

11.Use the IBM Job Control Language

12.Understand the SORT/MERGE statement

 

Achievement of these competencies will be measured by a combination of graded homework assignments and performance on a final examination.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: It is essential that you attend class in order to receive a passing grade. If you must miss class then please let the instructor know in advance, if possible. If you miss more than 4 classes for a class that meets 2 times a week, or 6 classes for a class that meets 3 times a week, then the instructor may withdraw you from the class.
