COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces microcomputer applications software,
including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphs, and their
integration.
STUDENT
COMPETENCIES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be
able to perform the following tasks:
1. Identity the parts and the interoperability of an office software suite
containing word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software
capabilities.
2. Identify the purpose and applications of an office software suite containing
word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software capabilities.
3. Produce a business letter, business memo, resume', and one-page outline using
word processing software.
4. Produce a dynamically linking spreadsheet data and graphs.
5. Produce a spreadsheet with formulas and graphs. A typical application would be
household budget with monthly total and yearly averages for several
categories.
6. Apply an appropriate graph type for given data in a spreadsheet—pie chart, bar
graph, etc.
7. Identify the components of a relational database: fields, records and tables.
8. Identify basic considerations when developing a database.
9. Develop a simple database with one table and enter data into that table.
10. Produce simple reports from an existing database.
11. Add, delete and change records within an existing database and understand the
consequences of those actions.
12. Understand the benefits of using presentation software.
13. Produce a multi-slide presentation using presentation software.
14. Browse and conduct simple searches on the internet to find specific sites and
topics.
15. Produce a simple web document with links. Experience the send and receiving
of E-mail with attachments.

All
projects must be turned in on or before the due date for that program or
project. No projects will be accepted after the due dates. Students are
expected to take the final examination, which is held during a designated
period at the close of the term. Faculty will administer examinations of
individual courses within the published schedule. Any makeup of final
examinations will be at the discretion of individual faculty.
No
incomplete grades will be given. Everyone must take the final exam.
Any
deviation from this policy must be authorized by the Department Chair.

Academic integrity
questions should be resolved by consulting the Student Code as documented in
the Midlands Technical College Student Handbook. All issues of academic
dishonesty will be referred to the director of Campus Life.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students may not miss more than 15% of scheduled classes, regardless of the reason for the absence. After exceeding this limit, a student will be withdrawn from the class by the instructor.

voice mail and loud speakers.
The College may be closed because of inclement weather. This news
should be available on the website at

at the main phone number at 738-1400, and announced on WIS-TV and radio.
Please check frequently in changeable weather for closings and re-openings. If
the College closing or reopening means that you will have at least 30 minutes
of a class, you should come to class. Please do not call the IST Department
office or the President’s office with closure questions.
