COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is a study of basic UNIX commands including the
vi editor, file structures, and shell programming.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be competent to perform the following tasks:

1. Understand 50 UNIX commands.
2.    Be able to write basic shell scripts using the vi editor.
3.
Understand the UNIX file systems.
4.
Know how to install the Linux Operating System.

Achievement of these competencies will be measured by a combination of graded homework assignments, and performance on quizzes and on a final examination.

COURSE COMPETENCIES AND PERFORMANCE MEASURES:  As part of the Information System Technology Department’s ongoing learning outcome assessment activities, the following competencies have been developed to support the stated learning outcomes, together with performance measures to assess the students' success in attaining those competencies.

Course Competency: Students will demonstrate understanding of the technical concepts involving install a brand new Linux system, setting file systems, and removing residual files.

Measurement Instrument and Success Criteria: The success criterion is that 70% of the students will answer 80% of the embedded technical questions correctly.

GRADING SCALE:

A 94 – 100
B 87 – 93
C 78 – 86
F 0 - 77

All projects must be turned in on or before the due date for that program or project. No projects will be accepted after the due dates.

No incomplete grades will be given. Everyone must take the final exam.

Any deviation from this policy must be authorized by the Department Head.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:  Academic integrity questions should be resolved by consulting the Student Code as documented in the Midlands Technical College Student Handbook. All issues of academic dishonesty will be referred to the director of Campus Life.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  It is important to support a policy that is clearly defined and unambiguous. Therefore, the following class attendance policy applies:   
Students cannot exceed four (4) absences for the Spring Semester and Fall Semester.  
Students cannot exceed three (3) absences for the Summer Semester.

In the event of an emergency, student and employee protocol is to immediately call Campus Security or local 911.  If an emergency occurs, employees and students may seek additional information and instructions via MTC Information Centers, email, college Intranet, the MTC website, campus voice mail and loud speakers.

The College may be closed because of inclement weather. This news should be available on the website at www.midlandstech.edu, at the main phone number at 738-1400, and announced on WIS-TV and radio. Please check frequently in changeable weather for closings and re-openings. If the College closing or reopening means that you will have at least 30 minutes of a class, you should come to class. Please do not call the IST Department office or the President’s office with closure questions.
