COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces microcomputer database concepts, including generating reports from database, creating, maintaining, and modifying databases.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to perform the following tasks:

1. Define and describe database concepts and terminology.
2. Design, maintain, and modify a database file structure.
3. Design and modify custom screen formats.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of printing and other output techniques of database reports.
5. Demonstrate ability to perform basic database operations.

COURSE COMPETENCIES AND PERFORMANCE MEASURES:  As part of the Information System Technology Department’s ongoing learning outcome assessment activities, the following competencies have been developed to support the stated learning outcomes, together with performance measures to assess the students' success in attaining those competencies.

 

Course Competency: Students will demonstrate ability to create a database, enter data into a database and edit and sort the data.

Measurement Instrument and Success Criteria:

Students will complete a standardized project involving a database, data entry, sorting the data. The project will be evaluated on a standard rubric. The success criteria is 80% of the students will score 3 or higher on the rubric.

All projects must be turned in on or before the due date for that program or project. Late work will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor. Make-up tests are given at the discretion of the instructor. No incomplete grades will be given. Everyone must take the final exam. Any deviation from this policy must be authorized by the department head.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: The departmental policy will apply. The number of absences allowed is equal to twice the number of times the course meets per week.

NOTE: Students must earn a grade of a "C" or better in all the courses offered within the Information Systems Department in order for the grade to be counted toward graduation.
