COMPUTER-AIDED TRANSCRIPTION


Certificate in Business (CAT6)

DESCRIPTION:
The Computer-Aided Transcription Certificate is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in the medical, legal, governmental, insurance or private forums as steno transcriptionists. Job opportunities include scoping and editing for court reporters; transcribing legal and medical documents, minutes of meetings, as well as law enforcement statements and incident reports.

In addition to the college's placement test, specific admission criteria for regular enrollment into the Court Reporting certificate program include:

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • typing skills

 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of 33 semester credit hours is required for this certificate.

Students must earn a grade of "C" or better in all of the courses offered within the Business and Information Systems Technology departments for the grade to count toward graduation. This includes courses with the following prefixes: ACC, BAF, BUS, CPT, CRP, IST, LEG, MGT, MKT and OST.

PROGRAM NOTES:

  1. Airport Campus only.
  2. The semester-by-semester sequence for the program requirements must be followed as some courses are offered only one time each year. For exceptions, please call Sandra Burgess.
  3. Students must be able to type at least 30 net words per minute prior to entry and possess above-average grammatical skills.
  4. Students must purchase their own shorthand machine (approximate cost: $400 used) and maintain adequate supplies of machine paper.
  5. In order to complete the program successfully, students will be expected to practice machine shorthand from 3 to 6 hours per day in order to acquire the necessary level of speed and accuracy.
  6. General education courses may be taken during any semester provided all prerequisites have been met.
  7. The General Elective must be three credit hours outside of department courses above the "100 Level."
