How to Take a Quiz Online

When it's time to take a quiz, start by double clicking on the Quiz icon on your WebCT home page.

(Note that your instructor may have chosen to customize the name or icon, so they might be slightly different than what you see here.)

This will result in the Quiz Availability Menu, which will display the names of various quizzes.

Next to the quiz you will see other information pertinent to it including Availability, Duration, Grade, and Attempts.

Availability refers to the time period during which your instructor is making the quiz available.

Duration is the length of time you have to take the quiz (in minutes and/or hours).

The Grade indicates the total number of possible points, and Attempts specifies the number of tries your instructor will allow you.

Every quiz that is listed may not be available. If your instructor has made a quiz available, the quiz title will be a hyperlink.

IMPORTANT
It is very important that you wait to click on the hyperlink until you are ready to take the Quiz. Otherwise it will be counted as one of your attempts to take the quiz, even if you don't even look at it.

But, let's assume you are ready, and you click on the hyperlink. In this course, this is what you would see.

You'll click on Begin Quiz.

For each answer, use the Down Arrow key to slowly scroll down the left frame till you get to the answer that you think is correct.

Select an answer by clicking on the circle next to your choice. Afterwards, be sure to click Save Answer. This lets the computer know that you've chosen an answer.

Note that a quiz can contain the following types of questions:

  • Multiple Choice: students select either one or multiple correct answers to a question. · Matching: match items in two columns.

  • Calculated: students answer a mathematical question.

  • Short Answer: students enter a word or short phrase, which is then matched against the possible answers.

  • Paragraph: students answer in a longer essay-type format. This type of question must be graded by the Instructor.

Multiple Choice, Matching, Calculated & Short Answer Questions can be automatically graded by WebCT based on what the Instructor has set-up. Instructors can use one or more of the above types of questions in a quiz.

Wondering how you'll know your answer has been registered? WebCT provides a handy method so you don't need to be in doubt.

When your answer has been saved, the symbol under the question changes from a red ball to a green star.

->

Please note that you should wait for the red ball to change to a green star before answering the next question.

Click on one of the Finish buttons on the screen when you're certain your answers are correct and you have finished the quiz.

It is possible to change any of your answers before you click the Finish button. If you do change an answer, be sure to click the Save Answer button again to register your new answer with the computer.

Looking at Quiz Results

Instructors can wait to release quiz scores and answers or they can release scores and results to students as soon as they finish the quiz. An instructor who waits until after the quiz deadline or until after all students have taken the quiz will usually post a message on the homepage of the course or the bulletin board saying the quiz results have been released.

After viewing this message, follow the directions below to View Quiz Results from the Home Page.

If the instructor releases scores immediately after you have taken the quiz, once you select the Submit Quiz for Grading button, a screen displays with a button that says View Results.

When you click on the button, the results of the quiz display.

To see a more detailed report, start with step 4 of View Quiz Results from the Home Page.

Viewing Quiz Results from the Home Page

Step 1

Step 2

Look to the right of the quiz title you are interested in getting the results for.

Step 4

To display a more detailed record of your quiz, click on Number in the Attempts column. If you have taken the quiz more than one time, you will see a number for each attempt.
