Engineering Design Technician
ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN ENGINEERING DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
CERTIFICATE IN COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN
About the Career
Engineering design technicians contribute their skills by working with mechanical, civil and electrical engineers, architects and planners in consulting firms, or in jobs with utilities or manufacturing firms. These designers help to develop and prepare design sketches, construction specification, and complete documentation packages for buildings, bridges, roads, machinery and facilities. Increasingly, automated manufacturing processes and extensive use of CAD/CAM have expanded the employment opportunities for these technical professionals; opportunities are expected to continue growing. Salaries are also increasing in this job market.
About the Program
Designed in cooperation with local industry, the Engineering Design Technology program at Midlands Technical College addresses the expanded role engineering technicians play in today's manufacturing environment. CAD training has been intensified and expertise in programmable controllers and electromechanical devices has been added to prepare the design technician for the workplace of tomorrow.
The program places strong emphasis on mathematical skills, materials selection and design, applied physics, manufacturing processes and computer applications in engineering technology. Technical courses include classroom lectures, hands-on opportunities and individual design projects that provide students with the technical skills needed on the job as design technicians.
Articulation opportunities may provide qualified high school graduates with advanced placement in the Engineering Design Technology program.
