Computer servicing technicians primarily perform hands-on repair, maintenance and installation of computers and related equipment. Opportunities for computer repairers should be excellent, as employers report difficulty finding qualified applicants.

Newly hired computer repairers may work on personal computers or peripheral equipment. With experience, they can advance to positions maintaining more sophisticated systems, such as networking equipment and servers. Experienced workers may become specialists who help other repairers diagnose difficult problems or work with engineers in designing equipment and developing maintenance procedures. Experienced workers also may move into sales and customer service positions, as well as management positions responsible for supervising other repairers.

About the Program

These certificates provide basic and advanced theory and laboratory practice required to provide the successful graduate with necessary skills for job entry-level positions in companies as electronic and computer service technicians. In training to become a computer servicing technician, students will learn to service, maintain, upgrade and optimize personal computers. In addition, students will learn networking fundamentals.

The basic certificate provides computer and local area network installation skills. With the more advanced certificate, students will combine practical hands-on ability with a theoretical approach toward repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting and designing computer and networking systems and other electronic systems including electronic instruments and control devices.

Either A+ certification or completion of the Basic Computer Maintenance Certificate is required as a prerequisite to this program. Taken together these programs provide skills required to be a competent technician in the manufacturing, sales, installation and maintenance of computer and other electronic systems.
