The Arts and Sciences division of Midlands Technical College provides instruction in Developmental Studies, English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Social and Behavioral Science, and Library and Information Literacy Skills. The primary function of Arts and Sciences at Midlands Technical College is to promote and facilitate student growth in the areas of critical thinking, personal values, and cultural interests. The Arts and Sciences division also offers developmental studies to students who wish to pursue college-level work but who need to build their basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics before entering a specific program.
The Arts and Sciences division provides courses meeting the general education requirements of a four-year college degree through the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science Transfer Programs. The AA/AS programs provide coursework that is substantially equivalent to the first two years of a four-year college degree at a fraction of the cost.
The division also offers certificates in English as a Second Language (ESL) and Chemical Technology. The ESL certificate is designed for students who need to acquire professional proficiency in English to begin a career or succeed in college. A student who completes the ESL Certificate program will have several courses that can be applied toward another degree, as well as having a certificate that demonstrates a professional level of competency in English. The Chemical Technology Certificate is a one year program that meets the core requirements for the South Carolina chemical process industries. Completion of the certificate prepares you for positions in the chemical processing industries.
