Criminal Justice Certificate is also offered.

This certificate (21 credit hours) is designed for practitioners employed by criminal justice agencies or for students wishing to diversify their major course of study.

The purpose of this certificate is to provide students with an academic post-secondary education in criminal justice.

Courses taken will provide a theoretical and systems approach to the entire field of criminal justice. Courses completed satisfactorily may be used towards the Associate Degree in Public Service.

 
    


Overview:
The Criminal Justice program is designed to prepare students for employment in the areas of law enforcement, correctional services, the courts, private security and juvenile services. The program covers a broad spectrum of criminal justice concepts and theories, including police organization, criminal law, criminal evidence and procedures, correctional administration and criminology, as well as appropriate general education courses.

The structure of the program is designed for those currently serving in the various professions related to the Criminal Justice field as well as those interested in pursuing a care in these fields. The Criminal Justice program is also offered for students who are planning to transfer to a four-year college.

Areas of instruction focus on concepts, theories and processes pertaining to all areas of the criminal justice system, including police work and organization, criminal justice, causes of criminal behavior, rules of evidence and criminal procedures and correctional services and systems.

Mission Statement:

Midlands Technical College’s Criminal Justice Program provides students with the skills, knowledge, and ethics necessary for them to pursue a successful career in the field of criminal justice and to be a positive force in their communities.

Goals:

  1. Quality Instruction: To promote learning that develops individual potential and produces competitive graduates for the workforce.
  2. Student Success: To prepare students for entry-level CRJ related occupations or for transfer to four-year institutions. To enhance the base of knowledge for those already employed in the criminal justice field.
  3. Program and Curricula: To offer a curriculum that prepares graduates for the workplace and meets the needs of area employers.
  4. Technology: To produce students that can utilize current technology related to their field.
  5. Professional Development: To produce students that can communicate
  6. effectively. To develop the critical, logical, and analytical abilities of students.
     

Program Outcomes:

1. Communicate effectively with others utilizing appropriate forms of communication methods.

2. Understand basic concepts of the American criminal justice system , the American Juvenile Justice system, structure and the causes and effects of crime as well as basic research methods.

3. Understand basic concepts relating to corrections and community supervision.

4. Understand basic concepts relating to the American Judicial System and criminal law.

5. Understand basic concepts, practices and problems associated with  law enforcement and criminal justice agencies.
 

Degree  and Certificate Awarded:
Graduates of this program earn an Associate Degree in Public Service or a certificate in Criminal Justice. In accordance with College policy, students must have an overall "C" average  (minimum 2.0 GPA) to graduate.

Special Requirements:
In order to complete the Criminal; Justice Technology program, students must maintain a "C" or better in 18 hours of required courses in the major. Also, 24 hours are required in general education courses and 24 hours of additional course requirements must be completed. This includes 15 hours of elective credits, of which 9 hours are to be selected for the list of approved electives found in the Criminal Justice Student Handbook. These electives allow students, along with their advisors, to tailor the program to particular needs.
