In-Focus

Changes I've seen, changes ahead

Wow! I can’t believe it’s been two years since I started doing In-Focus! Yes, I am now in my third year of a two-year degree! What changes my life has seen! My nine-year-old step son is 11 now, but he still loves hockey and video games. His grades have soared since I’ve been in college and sometimes that is my biggest source of inspiration. That my 5th grader can get some of the basics of my algebra makes me so proud. Let’s see how he does with my Calc next semester.

My husband was very jealous when I first started school, though he tried not to show it. His grandparents were going to pay for him to go to college and he turned it down. He said he didn’t need it for the career he wanted and he was right. It’s just that as he sees me growing and learning, he resents his own choice not to take the same opportunity. Even with that, he’s never been less than supportive and understanding of the challenges I’m overcoming and the personal growth I’m pursuing. He’s only grown more supportive as the time for me to transfer draws nearer.

I was diagnosed with a medical condition and, believe it or not, I was thrilled. It meant that I wasn’t stupid and doing something wrong. Better still, I received help for my symptoms. Now, with my doctor’s help, I’ve lost 30 pounds in six months and feel great. That motivated me to start going to the gym. In my husband’s words, “Like you aren’t juggling enough already?” Sometimes I have to skip the gym for homework, but when I’m caught up sometimes I skip homework for the gym.

I expect to transfer to the University of South Carolina in the spring of 2009. I’m still involved in tons of things here at MTC and I cannot tell you enough how that involvement has enriched and improved my education. I’ll keep you all updated as I finish this semester and then the spring and fall semesters.
